This month we interview Hannah Bylo of Hair by Hannah. Based in Matakana but travelling wherever needed, Hannah shares her tips for natural products and healthy hair. She is right up there in the world of wedding and event hair, and has such a wonderful presence (her referrals attesting to both). I caught up with Hannah at the lovely Puhoi Cheese Factory. Read on to find out more about this talented lady.

Thanks Hannah for taking the time to answer our questions.

First things first- How did you get into hair styling?

I chose to become a hair stylist for lots of reasons... the creative outlet it offers, the chance to meet so many incredible people and the fact that I get to help people feel confident and beautiful for a living is pretty amazing! I started my career at 15 and haven't looked back.

What made you specialise in weddings and events? I started specialising in weddings on Waiheke Island 10 years ago. There were around 800 weddings a year at that stage, so I was kept on my toes as one of the few local stylists. I quickly grew a passion for wedding hair and am loving it now more than ever. I feel very privileged to be involved in such a special day in peoples lives. Lucky me!

Why Matakana? I was drawn in by the beautiful beaches, laid back lifestyle and an opportunity for a better work/life balance.

What should we be looking for when choosing a hair stylist for our big day? My advice would be to do your research, choose someone who makes you feel at ease and really listens to what you want. A trial is a great chance to meet your hair stylist to get a feel for whether they're right for you and how they work. Is it possible to have our hair styled without any product? It is possible to go without product for some styles, however the end result won't be ideal - product is needed for most hair styling to create longevity. There are some amazing natural based products on the market now. A current favourite is De lorenzo, it's cruelty free, eco friendly, plant based and smells Divine!

Thats so great to know. What tips would you give us for natural healthy hair?

Try to have regular hair cuts/treatments (6 - 8 weeks) avoid overuse of hot tools and use a decent natural based shampoo and conditioner specifically for your hair/scalp. Most salons offer a more natural/gentle colour option too.

What is it about your work that you love the most?

The moment a bride catches the first glimpse of herself in the mirror, I always get teary!

Is there a memorable Bride that stands out?

Earlier this year, one of my brides got married in a massive storm on Waiheke Island, the weather was so bad that the ferry couldn't dock. At one point, 50 of her guests, photographer, band members and family were stranded in Auckland and we were unsure if they would make it to the Wedding! She dealt with it so well. Her two bridesmaids were amazing and the strength of their friendship really showed. Thankfully ferry sailings started again, everybody made it and celebrations started early. The hair held out through the storm too! Matakana has some beautiful wedding venues, any favourites?

The Stables is still one of the most popular venues and you can see why, it ticks a lot of boxes, rustic charm, delicious food/wine and the quaint St Andrews church next door for all weather ceremonies.

And finally, whats next for Hair by Hannah?

I have some exciting plans for the next summer season, It's been a dream of mine for a long time to have a fully mobile salon that I can take on location to weddings and events...so this year is about turning it into a reality! It's a big project, but anything worth having is worth working for... watch this space!
